AI SEO Ireland: A Practical Guide To Visibility In ChatGPT, Google AI And Perplexity
A grounded framework for making an Irish business accessible, understandable, useful and credible across AI-mediated search experiences.
AI SEO is best understood as making a business easy to access, correctly understand, use as a source and verify across AI-mediated search. For most Irish SMEs, that means extending strong SEO, content and reputation work—not replacing it with a new file, schema type or collection of machine-written FAQs.
There is no switch that makes a brand appear in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search has no guaranteed top placement. Google says its usual Search requirements apply to AI features and that eligibility never guarantees selection.
Start by separating the labels
The market uses several overlapping terms:
| Term | Useful working definition | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Improve discovery, understanding and usefulness in conventional search | Treating it as keyword placement alone |
| AEO | Make clear, supportable answers easy to extract and understand | Publishing hundreds of thin Q&As |
| GEO | Improve the likelihood that content informs or is cited in generative answers | Claiming a fixed generative ranking formula |
| AI SEO | Umbrella for technical, editorial, entity, authority and measurement work across AI search | Selling it as independent of the wider web |
These are industry descriptions, not regulated standards. Ask a supplier what work will actually be done, what asset you will own and how uncertainty will be reported.
Understand how the opportunity differs from a blue-link ranking
An AI answer may combine multiple searches, sources and models. It may cite a page, mention a brand without a visible citation, recommend a category of provider or omit the business entirely. The answer can change with wording, location, account context, product mode and time.
Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches and surface a broader set of supporting links. It also says AI features can use different models and techniques, so responses and links vary. OpenAI similarly describes multiple ranking factors and explicitly rejects guaranteed top placement.
This changes the measurement question from “What is our rank?” to:
- Are our pages and facts eligible to be retrieved?
- Are we relevant to the questions customers ask?
- Is our content strong enough to support an answer?
- Do independent sources corroborate important claims?
- Are we represented accurately when mentioned?
- Does any visibility contribute to qualified demand?
Use the five-layer visibility model
1. Access
Can the intended platform retrieve the page through robots rules, hosting, CDN, firewall and authentication? Does the URL return a successful response and stable canonical page?
2. Understanding
Can a reader and machine clearly identify the organisation, offer, audience, location, author, date and relationship between pages? Ambiguous brand names and contradictory facts weaken this layer.
3. Usefulness
Does the page answer a real question completely, with enough specificity to support a decision? Generic summaries add little to an answer assembled from better sources.
4. Corroboration
Do relevant independent sites, reviews, directories, associations, publications or customers confirm the entity and its work? A claim repeated only across company-owned pages is still self-assertion.
5. Measurement
Can the team repeat tests, record cited URLs, monitor referral data and connect influenced journeys to enquiries? Without a protocol, screenshots become anecdotes.
Audit technical access without confusing the controls
Crawler access is necessary for some forms of discovery, but it is not an instruction to allow every bot. Decide based on commercial goals, privacy, licensing, security and server capacity.
Google AI features
Google’s AI features guidance says a page must be indexed and eligible for a normal Search snippet to appear as a supporting link. There are no additional technical requirements, no special AI markup and no required AI text file.
Check that important pages:
- are not blocked by
robots.txtornoindex; - return useful HTML and successful status codes;
- have crawlable internal links;
- expose important information as text;
- declare sensible canonicals; and
- are verified and monitored in Search Console.
Google’s nosnippet control also prevents content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Controls have consequences; document why they exist.
ChatGPT Search
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance says inclusion requires allowing OAI-SearchBot and ensuring the host/CDN permits traffic from OpenAI’s published IP addresses. Allowing access does not guarantee a mention or position.
OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, a control related to potential model training. A business can make different choices for each. Recheck OpenAI’s publisher FAQ rather than copying an old robots block.
Perplexity
Perplexity’s crawler documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot and its current published IP ranges for search visibility. It describes that bot as separate from foundation-model training.
Make the business entity unambiguous
Create one controlled facts record containing:
- official and trading name;
- concise category and service definitions;
- real locations and service areas;
- contact details and canonical website;
- founders, leadership or qualified authors where relevant;
- company registration and professional memberships where appropriate;
- policies, pricing model or eligibility constraints; and
- authoritative profile URLs.
Then align the homepage, about page, contact page, service pages, Google Business Profile and important third-party listings. Consistency is not about making punctuation identical everywhere; it is about removing contradictions that change meaning.
Use structured data for supported facts visible on the page. Appropriate types may include Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, BreadcrumbList and genuine visible FAQs. Markup is a clarification layer, not evidence by itself, and it must not invent an address, review or credential.
Publish content worth using as a source
Google’s people-first content guidance favours original information, substantial treatment, clear sourcing and demonstrated expertise. It explicitly says Google has no preferred word count.
Apply a source-worthiness test to every important page:
- Direct: Does it answer the precise question early?
- Specific: Does it state scope, assumptions, dates and exceptions?
- Evidenced: Are factual claims linked to primary sources or supported by owned data?
- Original: Does it add an example, comparison, method, dataset or experienced judgment?
- Attributable: Is the author or reviewing expertise clear?
- Maintainable: Is there an owner and a reason to update it?
Build around customer decisions
Useful content clusters usually include:
- definitive service and category pages;
- cost and scope explanations;
- comparisons with clear selection criteria;
- implementation guides;
- original checklists, templates or calculators;
- case studies with attributable constraints and outcomes;
- concise definitions connected to deeper evidence; and
- policies, credentials and business facts.
For Hatch, website cost, local SEO cost and supplier-selection content can become strong sources because they help buyers make specific decisions.
Earn corroboration instead of syndicating claims
Third-party evidence may include accurate industry directories, recognised associations, local press, event programmes, partner pages, customer reviews and expert citations. Relevance and editorial legitimacy matter more than raw count.
Create assets others genuinely need:
- anonymised Irish benchmark data with a transparent method;
- a maintained regulatory or platform-change explainer;
- a calculator with assumptions;
- expert commentary grounded in real delivery;
- an original case study with client approval; or
- a useful local dataset or comparison.
Do not buy fabricated editorial mentions, create fake review profiles or publish undisclosed “independent” comparisons. Corroboration should be earned and verifiable.
Treat llms.txt and Markdown mirrors as experiments
An llms.txt proposal or clean Markdown representation may be easy to test, but neither is a universal standard that guarantees inclusion. Google explicitly says no new machine-readable AI file is needed for its AI features.
If testing one:
- keep canonical HTML as the primary source;
- avoid conflicting or stale copies;
- expose only information intended to be public;
- monitor crawl logs and outcomes;
- document ownership and update workflow; and
- do not delay higher-value technical or content fixes.
Measure without inventing an “AI rank”
Create a fixed prompt set covering category discovery, problem solving, comparison, brand verification and local intent. Define platform, mode, location/account state, date and expected decision stage. Record:
- whether the brand is mentioned;
- which URL/domain is cited;
- whether material facts are accurate;
- which competitors or source types appear;
- referral sessions and landing pages;
- assisted enquiries where customers mention AI research; and
- the page or evidence gap suggested by the result.
OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can support analytics. Referral measurement will still miss answers that influence a later branded search, typed URL, phone call or cross-device visit.
Do not refresh a prompt until the desired brand appears. Run a scheduled sample and preserve all results. Report ranges and changes, not a fabricated permanent position.
A 90-day implementation plan
Days 1–30: establish eligibility and truth
- Crawl the site and inspect indexation, robots, canonicals and key status codes.
- Decide crawler policies with technical/legal owners.
- Build the business-facts record and correct contradictions.
- Inventory service, comparison, proof and author pages.
- Run and save the baseline prompt benchmark.
Days 31–60: improve source quality
- Rewrite priority service pages around buyer questions and proof.
- Publish one genuinely original decision asset.
- Add accurate structured data supported by visible content.
- Strengthen internal links, authorship and update dates.
- Repair weak contact and conversion journeys.
Days 61–90: corroborate and retest
- Correct important third-party profiles.
- Pitch or contribute useful original evidence where editorially appropriate.
- Retest the fixed prompt set without changing the methodology.
- Review ChatGPT and other referral landing pages.
- Prioritise the next gaps by commercial value, not mention vanity.
Choose an AI SEO supplier carefully
Ask a prospective provider to show:
- the exact technical and editorial work included;
- how it separates documented facts, observations and hypotheses;
- whether you retain ownership of content, data and accounts;
- its prompt-testing protocol and limitations;
- how ordinary SEO and conversion work are integrated; and
- what it will refuse to guarantee.
Avoid anyone promising permanent citations, secret schema, mass-generated location/Q&A pages or a proprietary score presented as audited market share.
Your next step
Start with one commercially important service. Verify access, define the entity, improve the best decision page, add real evidence and establish a repeatable benchmark. That produces a useful learning loop even when platforms change.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is a practical umbrella term for improving how accurately and visibly a business and its content can appear in AI-mediated discovery. It combines ordinary search foundations with clear answers, entity consistency, evidence, third-party corroboration, platform access checks and measurement.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO focuses on discovery and usefulness in search; AEO commonly describes formatting and substantiating direct answers; GEO commonly describes work intended to improve representation in generative answers. These industry terms overlap and do not have one governing definition.
Can AI SEO guarantee a ChatGPT or AI Overview citation?
No. OpenAI says there is no guaranteed top placement in ChatGPT Search, and Google says meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. Access, useful content and evidence improve eligibility and usefulness, not control.
Do I need special AI schema markup?
No special AI schema guarantees inclusion. Google explicitly says no special schema is required for its AI features. Use accurate structured data supported by visible page content to clarify applicable facts and qualify for relevant search features.
Should I allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot?
Allow them if visibility in their search products supports your goals and your legal, security and content policies permit it. Also check that the CDN or firewall does not block published crawler traffic. Search discovery controls and model-training controls should be assessed separately.
Does an Irish business need an llms.txt file?
It is optional and experimental, not a prerequisite for Google AI features or a guarantee of citation elsewhere. Prioritise accessible canonical HTML, crawlable internal links, clear content, reliable facts and normal indexing before testing additional machine-readable files.
How should AI-search visibility be measured?
Use a fixed, versioned prompt set across defined platforms and dates; record mentions, cited URLs, factual accuracy and referral or conversion outcomes. Treat results as directional samples because answers vary and analytics cannot capture every influenced journey.
