How To Get Your Irish Business Found In ChatGPT And AI Search
A practical diagnostic and repeatable test method for improving business mentions, citations, factual accuracy and useful traffic from AI-mediated search.
To improve the chance of an Irish business being found in ChatGPT and other AI-search experiences, work through six stages: access, retrieval, understanding, corroboration, selection and conversion. The first broken stage is usually more useful than a vague “AI visibility score”.
You cannot submit a site and guarantee a recommendation. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses multiple factors and offers no guaranteed top placement. A useful programme improves the available evidence and measures outcomes without pretending to control the answer.
Understand what “found” can mean
AI visibility is not one outcome. A business may be:
- mentioned by name without a link;
- cited through its own website;
- described through a third-party source;
- included in a provider list or comparison;
- returned only for a branded question;
- represented inaccurately; or
- absent but followed by a later branded search or visit.
Define success before testing. A factual citation to a relevant service page can be more valuable than an unsupported mention in a broad list. An incorrect recommendation can create reputational and qualification costs even when the brand appears.
Diagnose the six-stage chain
1. Accessible
The crawler and supporting infrastructure can retrieve the page. Check robots rules, meta directives, authentication, status codes, CDN/WAF rules, JavaScript rendering dependencies and canonical URLs.
OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Search guidance says sites seeking inclusion should allow OAI-SearchBot and permit traffic from OpenAI’s published IP addresses. That is an eligibility action, not a placement guarantee.
2. Retrievable
The page is relevant to the prompt and discoverable through navigation, internal links or other sources. A buried page with vague headings and no contextual links may be technically accessible but difficult to retrieve for the right question.
3. Understood
The system can connect the business name, category, services, location, people and web properties without contradiction. A branded query failure often points here.
4. Corroborated
Important claims are supported by credible independent sources: customers, associations, directories, partners, publishers or original evidence reviewed elsewhere. Self-published repetition is not independent validation.
5. Selected or cited
The product chooses the business or page for this answer. Selection remains variable even when the prior stages are strong.
6. Converted
The mention or citation helps a suitable customer verify the business, visit a page, call, enquire or buy. A cited page that does not answer the next question wastes the opportunity.
Check crawler access properly
Review the live robots.txt, page-level robots tags, HTTP headers and server logs. A rule that looks correct in a CMS can be overridden by a CDN, firewall, staging configuration or X-Robots-Tag header.
For ChatGPT Search, distinguish OAI-SearchBot from GPTBot. OpenAI’s publisher guidance documents the former for search discovery and the latter as a potential-training control. Allowing one does not require allowing the other.
If Perplexity matters to the business, its official crawler documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot and current published IP ranges. For Google AI features, ordinary Google Search index and snippet eligibility apply; Google says no special AI file or schema is required.
Do not paste a generic crawler block into production without review. Decide what should be public, preserve private/customer areas, validate exact current user agents and test that bot mitigation is not returning a false 403.
Make category relevance explicit
An AI system should not need to infer the core offer from slogans. On each service page state:
- the service category in plain language;
- who it is for and not for;
- problems and outcomes addressed;
- geographic delivery and constraints;
- what is included, excluded and optional;
- process, timing and price factors;
- evidence and responsible author/reviewer; and
- one clear next action.
Avoid writing separate near-duplicate pages for every possible phrasing. Build one definitive page for each genuinely different service, then use internal links from relevant guides, comparisons and case studies.
For a local provider, align the website with its Google Business Profile and trusted listings. The Local SEO Ireland guide explains how accurate profiles, location architecture, reviews and local authority fit together.
Strengthen entity clarity
Create a business-facts ledger and audit where each fact appears. Include names, aliases, domain, contact points, trading address rules, service areas, people, credentials, memberships and profile URLs.
Resolve contradictions that affect meaning:
- an old brand name presented as current;
- inconsistent core service categories;
- addresses implying locations that do not exist;
- former staff still shown as leadership;
- expired memberships or unsupported awards;
- multiple official-looking social profiles; and
- third-party listings pointing to dead pages.
Structured data can make visible facts explicit, but it should match the page and use appropriate types. It cannot turn a claim into independent evidence or force a recommendation.
Build pages that deserve citation
Generic marketing copy is rarely the best source for a nuanced answer. Create material that reduces uncertainty and can be checked:
- price frameworks with assumptions and dates;
- scope comparisons and decision matrices;
- step-by-step methods tested in real delivery;
- original Irish data with sample and methodology;
- case studies that separate baseline, intervention and measured outcome;
- expert explanations that link to primary policy or technical sources; and
- useful tools whose calculation logic is visible.
Every factual claim should be one of three things: linked to a reliable source, supported by transparent first-party evidence, or clearly labelled professional judgment. Remove invented precision.
Use a strong answer structure: direct answer, boundary, explanation, evidence, exceptions and next step. This serves readers first and also produces coherent extractable passages.
Earn legitimate third-party confirmation
Audit sources that already describe the business. Correct high-value inaccuracies first. Then identify genuine gaps:
- relevant Irish trade or professional directories;
- local chambers and business networks;
- partner and supplier pages;
- event speaker or contributor profiles;
- customer reviews on appropriate platforms;
- Irish local or trade journalism; and
- citations of original research or tools.
The aim is not identical text everywhere. It is consistent core facts plus independent context. Do not purchase fake reviews, automate low-quality directory submissions or disguise owned comparison sites as independent sources.
Run a repeatable prompt benchmark
A single conversation is not a ranking report. Build a controlled benchmark before changing content.
Choose prompt families
Use 15–30 prompts across five families:
| Family | Example pattern | What it diagnoses |
|---|---|---|
| Category | “Which providers offer [service] in Ireland?” | Unbranded discoverability |
| Problem | “How should an Irish SME solve [problem]?” | Informational/source relevance |
| Comparison | “Compare ways to buy [service].” | Decision-stage evidence |
| Brand | “What does [business] do and where?” | Entity clarity and factual accuracy |
| Local | “Who provides [service] near [place]?” | Local evidence and context sensitivity |
Do not make prompts unnaturally favourable to the brand. Use language a real customer could plausibly use and preserve spelling exactly between waves.
Control the test
For each run record:
- prompt ID and exact wording;
- platform, product mode and model label shown;
- signed-in or fresh-session state;
- location setting or stated geography;
- date and time;
- whether web/search mode was used;
- brand mention and context;
- cited URL and domain;
- material factual errors; and
- analyst notes using a fixed coding scheme.
Run all prompts once per wave. Do not regenerate selected failures until the business appears; that changes the sample.
Score what matters
Report separate rates rather than one mysterious score:
- eligible prompts with a relevant brand mention;
- mentions with a visible citation;
- citations pointing to the owned site;
- materially accurate brand descriptions;
- citations landing on a commercially useful page; and
- resulting referral or assisted enquiries.
Small samples create wide uncertainty. Present raw counts beside percentages and preserve screenshots or exports for audit.
Interpret common result patterns
| Pattern | Likely investigation | Sensible next action |
|---|---|---|
| Brand absent from branded prompts | Access or entity ambiguity | Test crawl, canonical and core business facts |
| Brand understood but never in category prompts | Weak category relevance or corroboration | Improve definitive service page and legitimate third-party evidence |
| Mentioned with wrong facts | Conflicting/stale sources | Correct owned facts and request updates from authoritative sources |
| Third-party citation but no owned page | Owned page lacks usefulness or retrievability | Build a stronger canonical answer and internal links |
| Citation lands on weak page | Conversion disconnect | Improve proof, next step, speed and mobile usability |
| Results swing between runs | Normal variability or weak evidence margin | Increase sample discipline; avoid reactive rewrites |
These are diagnostic hypotheses, not disclosed platform ranking rules.
Connect visibility to analytics and sales
OpenAI says ChatGPT search referrals include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Create a reporting segment for known AI referrers, landing pages, engagement, form starts, submissions and qualified outcomes.
Also add one neutral attribution question to enquiry forms or sales calls: “How did you first hear about us?” Offer AI assistant/search as an option without forcing it. Referral data can be lost through privacy controls, copied links, later branded searches and cross-device journeys.
Use three evidence classes:
- Direct: identifiable referral followed by a tracked conversion.
- Self-reported: customer states AI discovery or research.
- Influenced: benchmark/citation evidence coincides with later demand but cannot prove individual causation.
Keep them separate in reporting.
Follow a 30/60/90-day plan
First 30 days: fix access and truth
- Save the baseline prompt benchmark.
- Audit OAI-SearchBot, Google and chosen crawler access.
- Repair important errors, redirects, canonicals and blocked text.
- Create the business-facts ledger.
- Select three commercially important service/questions.
Days 31–60: improve evidence
- Upgrade the core service and about/contact pages.
- Publish one original decision asset or transparent case study.
- Add accurate authorship, dates, sources and structured data.
- Improve internal links from relevant guides.
- Correct important external profiles.
Days 61–90: corroborate, retest and convert
- Earn appropriate partner, association, customer or editorial evidence.
- Repeat the benchmark exactly.
- Compare mention, citation and accuracy counts.
- Review referral and self-reported enquiries.
- Prioritise the next bottleneck by commercial impact.
Avoid tactics that create more risk than visibility
Do not:
- promise a permanent ChatGPT position;
- publish mass-generated thin answers;
- invent awards, reviews, locations or statistics;
- buy undisclosed “independent” recommendations;
- duplicate the site into unmanaged Markdown pages;
- add schema for facts not visible or true;
- open private content to crawlers without approval; or
- report selected screenshots as market-wide performance.
AI-search products change quickly. A strategy based on truthful business facts, useful pages, reputable evidence and disciplined measurement survives those changes better than a platform hack.
Your next step
Run the baseline before buying tools or rewriting the whole site. If the brand fails a branded prompt, begin with access and entity clarity. If it is understood but missing from relevant unbranded discovery, improve the service evidence and independent corroboration. If it is cited but produces nothing, fix the destination and conversion path.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get my business listed on ChatGPT?
There is no universal business-submission form or guaranteed listing position. Make the public site accessible to OAI-SearchBot if that aligns with your policy, publish clear and useful service information, maintain consistent business facts, earn genuine third-party corroboration and test visibility systematically.
Can I rank number one in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT answers are not a fixed numbered result set, and OpenAI says there is no way to guarantee top placement in ChatGPT Search. Measure mentions, citations, accuracy and commercial outcomes across a controlled prompt sample instead.
Why does ChatGPT mention competitors but not my business?
Possible causes include blocked access, weak category relevance, unclear entity facts, thin or generic pages, limited independent corroboration, stronger competitor sources or normal output variability. Diagnose each layer before assuming one cause.
Does allowing OAI-SearchBot allow OpenAI to train on my site?
OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search discovery separately from GPTBot, which relates to potential model training. Treat the controls independently and confirm the current official crawler guidance before editing robots.txt or firewall rules.
How often should AI visibility be tested?
Establish a baseline and retest on a consistent schedule, such as monthly or after a material content or technical change. Avoid daily reactive testing; answer variability can produce noise that encourages unjustified edits.
What prompts should an Irish business test?
Test category discovery, problem-solving, provider comparisons, brand verification and relevant local-intent prompts. Fix wording, platform, mode, location context, account state and date so later waves are comparable.
How long does it take to appear in AI search?
There is no dependable universal timeline. Crawling, indexing, content improvement, third-party publication and platform selection move at different speeds. Set implementation checkpoints and repeat the benchmark rather than promising a citation date.
